In the past four decades, most Western countries have begun to implement tougher policies on crime at the very moment when crime rate was decreasing. How to account for such a repressive turn? More fundamentally, why does one punish? And since the punitive moment is marked by exceptionally high levels of imprisonment, how to characterize the carceral condition? Based on a thorough discussion of legal and philosophical theories of punishment, and on an ethnographic study conducted in a French prison over four years, Didier Fassin will attempt to answer these questions.

Didier Fassin ist Professor am Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, USA). 2015 ist seine ethnographische Studie über das Gefängnissystem unter dem Titel L’Ombre du monde. Une anthropologie de la condition carcérale erschienen. Ab Herbst diesen Jahres ist sie auch in englischer Übersetzung unter dem Titel Prison Worlds. An Ethnography of the Carceral Condition verfügbar. Vom 15.-17. Juni wird Didier Fassin darüber hinaus die Adorno-Vorlesungen in Frankfurt halten.
